Before I moved to Gilbert almost 20 years ago, that was my first question, I had never heard of Gilbert Arizona. After moving to Gilbert, I learned while visiting the Gilbert Historical Museum that Gilbert, an agriculture town for many years, and was known as the “Hay Capital of the World” until the late 1920s.
Gilbert has changed a lot in the past 20 years, Gilbert, now sprawling over 76 square miles, with 310 days of sunshine annually for it residents to enjoy, it’s no wonder Gilbert has been one of the fastest growing cities in the county.
The Town of Gilbert’s Economic Development Department is not focused on once again being the hay capital of the world either, but instead, Gilbert’s Economic Development Department is focused on Bio-Med/Life Sciences.
The Town Council wants to be well prepared for the recovering economy and encourage creative ideas that contribute to the community vision that now includes: Bio Technology, Science, Aerospace. Stem Cell Research, Clean and Renewable Energy, Education and High Technology.
The town’s goal is to “Brand” Gilbert as a leader in Bio-Med and Life Sciences to help grow the local economy with an emphasis in the area of Bio-Med and Life Sciences with the resulting outcome being that, Gilbert will be known as an international leader in bio-med and life sciences. With this focus also attracting associated businesses.
